From Hawaii, where she was raised since age 4, Pastor Juli Patten is a 2020 graduate of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley,
after 30-plus years in teaching (primarily 2nd-4th grades). She did her internship at Davis Lutheran Church in Northern California, where all her
references from pastor and congregants were glowing. “We wish we could have called her” was a frequent refrain.
Pastor Juli currently is a Resident Hospital Chaplain, work she loves and plans to continue here in a volunteer capacity. She is passionate about
caring for the marginalized among us, including the homeless and the hungry, patients in nursing homes and the LGBTQ+ community. She
has been very active in WELCA at her own small Maluhia Lutheran Church in Waianae on Oahu, at Davis Lutheran and through the Pacifica
Synod, as a board member, creating and leading Bible studies. A lifelong Lutheran, Juli has served in nearly every layperson role at Maluhia, including on council.
She has many great ideas for the “regathering of our church flock” post-Covid, which will be her top priority. She will be reaching out to every member of the congregation in various ways, starting as soon as she joins us. Juli is creative, compassionate and high energy with a great sense of humor and rapport with people. The Call Committee felt completely comfortable with her almost immediately. Her hallmark is making connections in the community and with other churches, which will be really helpful to us in the coming year.
First-call pastor Juli and her wife Michelle Pommier, married in 2018, have 5 grown children between them. They plan to live in San Clemente, as Juli wants to be close to the church campus so she can be a consistent presence at church, the preschool and in the community, even with a 75% call. They will be renting an apartment here and not selling their Hawaii condo, which will now be their vacation home. She loved our sanctuary when we held a
socially distanced, masked conversation with her at church, and loved our location on North Beach, saying, “I won’t miss Hawaii, not with this.” But the best was when the train came by, we waved and Juli exclaimed, “I love trains!” She also loves little kids! We were told by Pastor Terry Tuvey Allen at the start of our process, “You’ll just know” when the right pastor comes along. And she was correct. Each member of the Call Committee felt a
real prompting from the Holy Spirit that this person, Juli Patten, is the pastor God intends to lead Christ Lutheran. Thanks be to God!
A message from Pastor Juli: My favorite quote from the Bible is from Matthew 22:36-39 36 “Teacher,” he asked, “which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and the most important commandment. 39 The second most important commandment is ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’” This is what guides my life and my ministry! “I was thrilled to be recommended for call by your Call Committee and Church Council and, if you do call me, I can’t wait to get to know all of you and get to work for Christ Lutheran and the Lord. Love and aloha!”
